Hinweise auf die Brunnen Abrahams, wie sie allgemein bekannt sind, finden sich in Genesis (21:23–24 und 26:23–33). Coubertin bemalte in der Regel religiöse Themen, aber in diesem Bild stellte er den Platz als Szene des zeitgenössischen Lebens dar. Dieses Gemälde wurde im Pariser Salon von 1850–51 ausgestellt.
