Ulrich studierte in München und verbrachte die meisten seiner Karriere im Ausland, malte malerische Szenen des Alltags. Hier zeigte er Arbeiter, die Glas blasen, ein Handwerk in Venedig im späten neunzehnten Jahrhundert. Die Umgebung ist das Glasmacherzentrum der Stadt auf der Insel Murano. Ulrichs Faszination mit handwerklichen Fächern parallele die internationale Kunst- und Handwerksbewegung, die altmodische Handwerkskunst über industrielle Produktion bewertete. Das Gemälde wurde 1886 an der zweiten Preisträger-Ausstellung der National Academy of Design ausgezeichnet und spiegelt den Grad wider, in dem ein internationaler Geschmack in der amerikanischen Kunst entstanden war.
