Im Jahre 1894 als Autor eines Briefes (die Notiz, oder der Schlupf) an einen ausländischen Agenten die Versendung von Militärdokumenten angekündigt, Dreyfus wurde in der Kamera von einem Kriegsrat versucht, der ihn einstimmig zur Deportation und militärischen Degradation verurteilte. Während er seinen Satz auf der Teufelsinsel servierte, wurde eine Überprüfungskampagne von Senator Scheurer-Kestner, Lt. Col. Picquart und Dreyfus Bruder beschuldigen Commander Esterhazy.
