Schuffenecker wurde im Elsass geboren und studierte unter Paul Baudry (1828-1886) vor Abendunterricht mit Carolus-Duran (1837-1917) und an der Academie Suisse in Paris. Er traf Gauguin 1872 in der Maklerfirma von Bertin. Nicht nur war er 1886 für das historische Treffen von Bernard und Gauguin in Pont-Aven verantwortlich, sondern organisierte 1889 auch die erste Ausstellung der Pont-Aven-Gruppe im Cafe Volpini in Paris. Dieses Werk zeigt die Frau von Felicien Champsaur, einem Roman aus dem späten 19. Jahrhundert. Das Porträt gibt einen Eindruck von Raffinesse, mit Madame Champsaur in eleganter Stadtbekleidung mit Breton-Stil Stickerei dekoriert. Der Bezug auf Rodins Skulptur Succube (The Succubus) ruft den weiblichen Dämon mit der Macht auf, Männer zu verführen.
