Die faulen Atmosphären der Landschaften von Claude wecken den Beginn oder das Ende eines Sommertages. Sein charakteristischer Stil kontrast intensives Licht im Hintergrund mit lyrischem Schatten im Vordergrund. Anstatt ein streng klassisches Thema, hat Claude ein Gebäude auf der linken Seite, die typisch für die Landschaft außerhalb von Rom. Die Künstler sahen sich oft als unveränderliche Arcadia vor, eine utopische Welt, die auf der antiken Poesie basierte und von Hirtendichtern und Musikern besiedelt wurde, wie sie in der Mitte gesehen wurden.
