Einer der Kritiker von Monet beschrieb diese Leinwand von 1919 als Wasserlilies "in voller Blume behauptet[ing] selbst ... ihre goldenen Scheiben, umhüllt in lila, gegen die trüben Gewässer." Obwohl sich der fast achtzigjährige Künstler mit den jüngsten Gemälden widersetzte, machte er diese Landschaft und drei verwandte Bilder mit Blick auf den Markt und erzählte seinen Händlern Gaston und Josse Bernheim, dass er "auf ihnen leidenschaftlich arbeiten". Die Bernheimer Brüder kauften schnell das Quartett.
