Im Rahmen seiner umfangreichen Gartenplanung in Giverny hatte Monet einen Teich gegraben und 1893 mit Lilien gepflanzt. Ab 1899 drehte er sich immer wieder zum Thema und versuchte jede Beobachtung, jeden Eindruck und jede Reflexion der Blumen und Wasser zu erfassen. Als er dieses Werk in den späten Teenagern anfing, hatte Monet einen völlig neuen, flüssigen und etwas audazitiven Stil der Malerei erreicht, in dem der wasser-lily Teich zum Ausgangspunkt für eine fast abstrakte Kunst wurde.
