Im Herbst 1886 suchte Claude Monet auf der Insel Belle-Île-en-Mer vor der Küste der Bretagne ein robustes und unfruchtbares Gelände. Als er seine Tätigkeit im Dorf Kervilahouen auf der Atlantikseite der Insel zentrierte, schrieb er dem Miteindrucker Gustave Caillebotte: „Ich bin hier einen Monat, und ich schleife weg; ich bin in einer herrlichen Region der Wildnis, eine enorme Haufen Felsen und Meer unglaublich für seine Farben; gut, ich bin sehr begeistert.“ Dennoch bekennte Monet, Schwierigkeiten zu haben, das wilde Meer zu malen, weil er verwendet wurde, um die ruhigeren Kanalgewässer zu malen.
