Col John W. Thomason, USMC, war während des Ersten Weltkriegs Kapitän. Als Künstler nutzte er seine Fähigkeiten, um repräsentative Beispiele deutscher Soldaten zu malen, die drei Typen von Kopfzahn tragen. Diese tempera-and-ink-on-Papier Kreationen dienten zwei Zwecken. Zuerst hatte er Ziele zu schießen, und zweitens würde er den Feind leichter erkennen. Die Arbeiten sind durch Löcher von ihm Modell 1911 .45 Kaliber Pistole markiert.
