Dieses unvollendete Porträt wurde als Werk von Daniele da Volterra, Michelangelos treuer Anhänger und Autor einer Bronzebüste des großen florentinischen Künstlers identifiziert. In der Tat, ein Inventar nach Daniele's Todeslisten "ein Portrait von Michelangelo auf dem Panel." Die Quelle für zahlreiche Kopien, das Porträt wurde wahrscheinlich um 1545 gemalt, als Michelangelo wäre um siebzig gewesen. Obwohl das Werk unvollendet aussieht, hat Daniele die Besonderheiten des Bildhauers und seine linke Hand voll beschrieben, fast als erinnerte Michelangelo's Vorstellung, dass, "Es ist notwendig, einen Mitgefühl in den Augen zu halten und nicht in der Hand, für die Hände Ausführung, aber die Augen Richter."
