In den frühen 1970er Jahren war David Porter ein Fotograf für einige der einflussreichsten australischen Rockmusik und Underground-Publikationen (Go-Set, Daily/Planet, Rolling Stone (Australian Edition), The Digger. Porter basierte in Melbourne, sein Thema der Zeitgeist seiner Rock/Pop-Musik, Underground-Theater und Counterculture-Szenen, manchmal als „David Porter“, manchmal „Jacques L’Affrique“, manchmal „Jack Africa“. 1973 verließ er Melbourne, arbeitete in der kommerziellen Fotografie und verfolgte eine Lehre Karriere. Beliebt bei Melbourne ‘Head Locations’ wie dem T F Much/Much More Ballroom (gefilmt dort von Peter Weir for Three Directions in Australian Pop Music (1972). Langer Verein mit Melbourne alternativer Theaterszene, insbesondere Tribe, La Mama und The Pram Factory. Erstellte Soapbox Circus im Jahr 1976, die die musikalischen und performativen Talente von Captain Matchbox und der Australian Performing Group kombinierte (vor der Gründung von 0f Circus Oz (1978).
