St. Jerome (ca. 342–420), einer der vier großen Ärzte der Westlichen Kirche, wird für seine acetische Torte und für seine monumentale lateinische Übersetzung der Bibel verehrt, die hier durch das große Volumen repräsentiert wird, auf dem er seine Hände ruht. Nach einer alten Konvention zeigt der Künstler ihn in den Roben eines Kardinals. Diese Komposition erwies sich als beliebt und wurde in mindestens vier Versionen von El Greco und seinem Shop produziert; eine davon ist im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
