Geboren Edward Muggeridge, in Kingston-Upon-Thames, England, Muybridge änderte seinen christlichen Namen nach Eadweard im Jahre 1850, und sein Nachname nach Muybridge einige Jahre später. Er ging um 1855 nach San Francisco und eröffnete dort eine Buchhandlung.
