Auch bekannt als The Rape hat dieses Gemälde seit seiner Kreation ein Konundrum für Kunsthistoriker geschaffen. Während der Zeit, die es gemalt wurde, war Degas für historische Gemälde oder jene mit einem literarischen Einfluss bekannt, aber kein solcher Einfluss oder historische Geschichte kann im Inneren verwandt werden. Das weiteste Abkommen ist, dass das Gemälde eine Szene in dem Roman Therese Raquin, von Emile Zola, veröffentlicht 1867. Es wird als eine der dramatischsten und theatralischsten aller Degas’ Kompositionen bezeichnet, da die Gegenstände im Raum fast als Requisiten platziert werden und die Darstellung der Figuren eine stufenartige, theatralische Qualität aufweist.
