Dieses Bild zeigt eine Frau, die scheint geweint oder krank zu sein, in der Art unbehüteten Moment, den Degas in seiner Kunst während seiner Karriere erforschte. Der Fokus auf die Aufnahme eines transienten emotionalen Zustands markiert ihn schnell und mit großer Ökonomie eher als ein formales Porträt. Ein früher Besitzer, der Maler Egisto Fabbri (1866–1933), gab die Leinwand der ersten Ausstellung der Impressionistischen Kunst in Italien, die 1910 im Lyceum Club in Florenz stattfand.
