Von 1878 bis 1880 schuf Degas fast zwanzig Fans, die weitgehend von Stilelementen in japanischer Kunst beeinflusst wurden. Diese schimmernden Seidenfans waren nicht für den tatsächlichen Gebrauch bestimmt, sondern wurden zusammen mit Gemälden oder Zeichnungen an Wänden aufgehängt. Diese Aquarell zeigt eine Abendshow von Émilie Bécat im Garten des Café des Ambassadeurs auf den Champs-Élysées, wo die Sängerin und Tänzerin für sie gefeiert wurde
