Manets Stiefsohn, Léon Koëlla-Leenhoff, erinnerte daran, dass er 1861 für dieses Bild aufgestellt hatte, als er etwa zehn Jahre alt war. Manet kleidete ihn in einem Kostüm aus dem siebzehnten Jahrhundert und fügte ein Zeitschwert als Requisit hinzu – eine Hommage an die großen spanischen Maler, die er bewunderte, vor allem Velázquez. Kritiker überprüften die Arbeit günstig bei den fünf Gelegenheiten, dass Manet sie zwischen 1862 und 1872 ausgestellt. 1889 spendete der New Yorker Sammler Erwin Davis Boy mit einem Schwert und einer jungen Dame 1866 (89.21.3) dem Metropolitan; sie waren die ersten Werke von Manet, um eine Museumssammlung zu betreten.
