Munch unternahm diese Komposition 1890 (Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo), während er im Pariser Vorort Saint-Cloud lebte. Sein Freund, der dänische Dichter Emanuel Goldstein, stellte sich für die rätselhafte, im Mondlicht silhouettete Figur. Die melancholische Stimmung ist mit dem jüngsten Tod von Munchs Vater verbunden, aber die Szene scheint für den Künstler breitere Bedeutung zu haben. Er wiederholte es mehrmals in verschiedenen Medien; diese Version wurde 1893 in Berlin gemalt, zu einer Zeit, als er eine Reihe von nächtlichen Fensterszenen machte, die für ihre intime Atmosphäre und evocative Lichteffekte bemerkenswert waren.
