Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851) war ein Staatsmann – der erste amerikanische Minister für Mexiko – Autor und Botaniker. Er führte in dieses Land die mexikanische Blume später für ihn benannt: Euphorbia pulcherrima, allgemein bekannt als poinsettia. Malbone porträtierte auch Poinsetts Schwester Susan und Hugh Bridport (q.v.) porträtierten Poinsett im späteren Leben.
