Deerhounds wurden gezüchtet, Hirsche zu jagen, indem sie nach unten laufen, eine Methode, die als coursing oder deer stalking bekannt ist. In dieser Studie, Landseer sympathisch evozierte sein Thema Lebensfähigkeit und Poise. Der Hund erscheint in einer ähnlichen Pose, die unter der Hand seines Meisters, des Herzogs von Gordon, in Landseers Szene in den schottischen Highlands (ca. 1825–28; private Sammlung) lächelt. Das Gemälde war eines der ersten aristokratischen Jagdporträts des Künstlers, und es stärkte seinen meteorischen Aufstieg als britischer erster Maler von Tier- und Sportbildern.
