Vedder ist bekannt für seine visionären Gemälde, die klassische und allegorische Allusionen enthalten, die Vorläufer der symbolistischen Bewegung in den Vereinigten Staaten waren. Diese Serie von Gemälden hat jedoch ein literarisches Thema, das auf einem bestimmten Text basiert – Aesops fable "The Miller, His Son, and the Donkey". Vedder benutzte sein geliebtes Italien als die Einstellung der klassischen Fabel, in der ein hapless Miller und sein Sohn versuchen, Kritiker zu beleidigen, was zum Tode ihres wertvollen Esels führt.
