Nach Abschluss ihres berühmten 1787 Porträts von Marie Antoinette und ihren Kindern malte Vigée Le Brun dieses Werk, ohne zu sitzen und wahrscheinlich auf eigene Initiative. Sie glaubte, dass es Anträge auf andere Bilder der Königin geben würde, aber am Ende verkaufte sie diese Leinwand seit vielen Jahren nicht. Das Gesicht und die Pose von Marie Antoinette in den beiden Kompositionen sind fast identisch, aber hier hat sie gealtert und kommuniziert einen Grad an regaler Schwere.
