Obwohl in Cincinnati geboren, zog Elizabeth Nourse 1887 nach Frankreich, wo sie ihre lange und produktive Karriere als Expatriate Maler verbrachte. In 1890 Nourse reiste nach Italien für einen längeren Aufenthalt besuchen Grottaferrata, Tivoli, Venedig, Florenz und Rom. Diese ätherische Aquarell mit Saint Mark’s im Hintergrund zeigt Nourse arbeiten aus Türen, nicht nur ein Ateliermaler von Müttern und Kindern, die Arbeit, für die sie am besten bekannt ist.
