Delacroix porträtierte selten andere als seine engste Familie und Freunde. Seine Zuneigung für Madame Riesener, eine Tante durch Heirat, wird durch die Offenheit dieses Porträts ausgedrückt. Sie war einmal für ihre Schönheit bekannt: Etwa dreißig Jahre vor dem Datum dieses Porträts diente sie als Lady-in-Witing, um Josephine zu beeindrucken und Napoleons Augen gefangen zu haben, in einer kurzen Verbindung mit ihm. Nachdem sie starb, schrieb Delacroix an George Sand, "jeder der Wesen, die für unsere Existenz notwendig sind, die verschwindet, nimmt mit ihm eine ganze Welt von Gefühlen, dass keine andere Beziehung wiederhergestellt werden kann."
