Dieses Gemälde zeigt den Moment in Shakespeares epische Tragödie Hamlet, in dem der Protagonist, der privat mit seiner Mutter, Königin Gertrude von Dänemark gesprochen hat, eine Figur hinter den Vorhängen ihres Schrankes bemerkt. Unmittelbar nachher wird Hamlet den versteckten Polonius mit seinem Schwert inspizieren und den unvergesslichen Satz "Wie jetzt! Eine Ratte? Tot für einen Dukat, tot!" Die Komposition ist identisch mit einem schwarzen und weißen Lithographen Delacroix, der für ein dem Spiel gewidmetes Portfolio erstellt wurde, das erst 1843 veröffentlicht wurde.
