Ein französischer Künstler beeinflusst von ukiyo-e, buddhistischer Kunst und romanischer Skulptur. Mit klar geschnittenen Konturen und flach geteilten Farben vermischte Gauguin reich implizite Bilder mit Ornament und ist Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als repräsentativer Künstler des Symbolismus und Synthetismus in Frankreich bekannt. In seinen späteren Jahren verließ er Europa für Tahiti und schuf Werke, die die Bedeutung der menschlichen Existenz scharf in Frage stellen.
