Der Sohn eines Seemanns, Eugène Boudin verbrachte seine Jugend bei Honfleur an der Normandie Küste und dann im Hafen von Le Havre, wo seine Familie im Jahre 1835. Obwohl Boudin an seine Stillleben als nichts anderes gedacht hat als „Raumbilder zu gewöhnen“, haben diese Werke eine beeindruckende, nüchterne Adel. Sie sind auch historisch bedeutsam, da es auf Boudins Beispiel zurückzuführen war, dass Monet in den 1850er Jahren Stillleben gemalt hat, und die Impressionisten würden das Interesse an diesem Thema fortsetzen. Anstatt die impressionistische Art zu übernehmen, Atmosphäre und Objekte in flackernden Schlaganfällen zu machen, blieb Boudin jedoch dem objektiven Realismus gewidmet, der sein ursprüngliches Stil gewesen war.
