Baroccis Naturalismus, erhöhte Emotion und koloristische Brillanz half, die Bühne für das zu setzen, was als Barockkunst bekannt wurde. Seine subtilen, weichen Oberflächentexturen wurden teilweise vom italienischen Maler Correggio inspiriert. Diese Leinwand wird als Meditation über den Heiligen Franziskus von Assisi (1181/82–1226) konzipiert, der in einer Grotte auf dem Berg La Verna gezeigt wird, wo er die Stigmata erhielt, die hier als überragende Nägel dargestellt ist, in Übereinstimmung mit früh Franziskaner geschriebenen Quellen.
