Der jüdische Maler Felix Nussbaum emigrierte 1935 nach Belgien. Nach der deutschen Invasion 1940 wurde er in das französische Internierungslager St. Cyprien deportiert. Von dort konnte er nach Belgien fliehen. In diesem Gemälde ist Nussbaum in der Lage, die Verzweiflung und Hoffnungslosigkeit, die er im Lager erlebt hat, zu kommunizieren.
