Dieses Gemälde wurde nach dem Tod von Valentine Godé-Darel am 25. Januar 1915 in Vevey geschaffen (siehe ihr Porträt von 1912, inv. 1133). Zwei Farbstudien (Privateigentum; Ferdinand Hodler, Exh. Katze Zürich/Berlin, Nationalgalerie/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983, Nr. 176 f., Farbkranke. S. 393 f.) gelten als Vorstufen. In seiner Theorie des Parallelismus verbindet Hodler die Horizontale mit dem Tod, in dessen große Einheit das Leben zurückkehrt.
