Durch das Abspielen von Tiefenindikatoren verwandelte Khnopff das Regal, das die Vase in einen abstrakten Streifen Blau vor einem Krimson Hintergrund unterstützt. Der japanische Fan und die blass rosa, creme und blauen Farben zeigen die Bewunderung des Künstlers für den innovativen Stil von James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903). Whistlers Arbeit war bekannt unter der künstlerischen Vorhut in Belgien, die mit der radikalen Ausstellungsgesellschaft Les XX in Brüssel gezeigt wurde, die Khnopff gefunden hat.
