Am 15. November 1796 konfrontierten die 19.000 Soldaten der italienischen Armee 24.000 Österreicher unter dem Befehl General Joseph Alvinczy auf der Arcole Brücke, die den Agide überblickt. Über zwei Tage versuchten die französischen Truppen, die österreichische Verteidigung zu durchbrechen, indem sie ein Zangenmanöver unter dem Befehl von Generals Augereau und Masséna ohne Erfolg durchführten. Angesichts der Entmutigung der Truppen entscheidet Bonaparte dann, eine Flagge zu ergreifen, um seine Männer zum Sieg zu führen. Das Board erinnert an den Napoleon auf der Arcole Brücke von Antoine-Jean Gros (1796).
