Granet machte zahlreiche Skizzen von Monte Mario aus dem Pincian Hill, dem Ort der Villa Medici, der 1803 zum Sitz der Französischen Akademie in Rom wurde. Dieses Beispiel wurde während der kurzen Zeit nach Sonnenuntergang gemalt, wenn genügend Tageslicht bleibt, um Farbe wahrzunehmen, und hätte in nur zwanzig Minuten abgeschlossen sein können. Fast alle Ölstudien des Künstlers befinden sich im Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence; dieser wurde von seinem Schüler Baptistin Martin (1818–1901) geerbt und in seiner Familie abstammt.
