Salviati und Rimbotti, ein Arzt, gehörten zur selben literarischen Akademie; dies ist wahrscheinlich ein informelles Porträt für seinen Freund. Die gleichmäßige, kristalline Oberfläche stammt aus den dünnen, transparenten Farbschichten auf der Holzplatte, die außergewöhnlich gut erhalten ist. Inschriften und Wachsdichtungen der auf der Rückseite des Paneels sichtbaren Rimbotti-Familie helfen, den Standort des Gemäldes für fast fünfhundert Jahre zu verfolgen.
