Eine versklavte Frau namens “Aunt Betsy” diente als Kindermädchen für vier von Williams Carter Wickhams Kindern in seiner Plantage, “Hickory Hill”, Hannover County, Virginia. Francis Blackwell Mayer, ein Maryland-Künstler und Familienfreund, bemalte dieses Porträt von Betsy als Geschenk für die beiden ältesten Kinder. Frank Mayer war ein bekannter amerikanischer Genre Maler vor allem für seine Aquarell- und Ölgemälde bekannt. Seine persönliche Beziehung zur Familie Wickham führte zu einer sehr persönlichen Darstellung eines der Versklavten Wickhams. Posed Portraits von versklavten afrikanischen Amerikanern waren während der Antibellum-Periode selten. Überlebende Wickham-Familienpapiere weisen darauf hin, dass „Aunt Betsy“ im Herbst 1865 als freier Mann starb. Sehr wenig ist von ihrem Leben bekannt und was ihre Meinung von ihrem Porträt war.
