1910 ging Cadell nach Venedig. Das starke Licht, Reflexionen von den rissigen Kanälen und lebendigen Farben des Adriahafens schlüsselte Cadells vorhandene impressionistische Tendenzen zu einem neuen Ton. Es war in Venedig, dass Cadell ein Farbstoff wurde. Dies ist ein Blick von der Pensione de la Calcina über die Zattere auf die Insel La Guidecca. Die Verwendung des französischen Fensters, um eine bekannte Ansicht zu rahmen, verleiht dem Gemälde und dem Kontrast zwischen dem schattigen Innenraum und dem hell beleuchteten, bunten Kanal darüber hinaus Struktur. Dies war während des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts ein beliebtes Bildgerät für Künstler, war aber besonders beliebt bei den französischen Fauve Malernern wie Matisse im frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert.
