Smith, geboren in Baltimore, war fast vollständig ein selbstgeissener Künstler, der vor allem für seine Landschaften und Illustrationen bekannt war. Er hatte eine vielschichtige Karriere als Ingenieur, Künstler, Autor und Orator. Nach dem Bürgerkrieg arbeitete er als Marine-Ingenieur, aber um 1880, um die ganze Zeit zu malen. Besonders bekannt war er für seine Holzkohle und Aquarelle, die oft in seinen Reisebüchern erschienen. Er malte oft en plein Luft und stellte an den großen Ostküstenplätzen, darunter die National Academy of Design, das Art Institute of Chicago und die Pennsylvania Academy.
