John Piper war ein etablierter Künstler an der Spitze der neo-römischen Bewegung zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Er hatte seinen Ruf in den 1930er Jahren etabliert, konzentrierte sich auf Architektur und Landschaften und experimentierte auch mit Abstraktion. Durch die 1940er Jahre war Piper von der vollen Abstraktion weggezogen und teilte einige Ähnlichkeiten im Stil mit Künstlern wie Graham Sutherland, die zusammen mit den Ähnlichkeiten von Henry Moore und jüngeren Künstlern wie John Minton oft als Neo-Romantik gruppiert wurden.
