Dieses Werk und das Gemälde der Muttergottes der Pillar wurden von Francisco Goya abgeschlossen, als er aus Italien zurückkehrte. Diese angenehmen Szenen, die für seine Familie Fuendetodos – die Lucientes – gemalt wurden, sind für einfache und beliebte Hingabe geeignet. Der Heilige Franz Xavier war eine Gesellschaft Jesu in Indien und Japan. Diese Leinwand zeigt seinen Tod in Ostasien. Es ist inspiriert von einer Zeichnung von Niccolo Bertuzzi, die der junge Maler beim Training an der Luzán Academy in Zaragoza sah.
