An seinem Tag war Frank Duveneck Cincinnatis berühmtester Künstler. Geboren in Covington, Kentucky, an bayerische Einwanderer, reiste Duveneck 1870 nach München, um seine Kunstausbildung zu verfolgen. Zu dieser Zeit beherbergte München einige der fortschrittlichsten Künstler Europas, darunter Wilhelm Leibl, dessen dunklen, unsentimentalen Porträts den jungen Amerikaner beeindruckten. Duveneck wurde später zu einem einflussreichen Lehrer und brachte die befreienden Aspekte der progressiven deutschen Kunst in die Vereinigten Staaten.
