Die ikonische Aussicht von Neapel, die durch den Cleft zwischen Virgils Grab auf der linken Seite und das felsige Outcropping auf der rechten Seite gesehen wurde, war eine Hauptattraktion der Grand Tour. Catel nutzte diese Plein-Luftskizze als Grundlage für eine größere Komposition (Museum Folkwang, Essen), die einen Hund und zwei menschliche Figuren, von denen eine der russischen Staatsbeamten Prinz Alexander Nikolaevich Golitsyn sein könnte, der den Künstler auf einer Reise nach Süditalien im Jahre 1818 begleitete.
