Munch hatte eine unruhige familiäre vergangenheit . Neben seinem überheblichen pietistischen vater , seine mutter starb als kleines kind an tuberkulose , und seine schwester starb neun jahre später an derselben krankheit . Dieses gemälde ist ein bild von Munch’s ältere und lieblingsschwester sophie liegt im bett , als sie an tuberkulose starb 15 jahre alt . Munch schuf viele reproduktionen dieses gemäldes , darunter eine, die in dresden stattfand , Deutschland . In dem 1930’s und 40’s Nazi’s als angesehen Munch’s kunst als “ degenerieren art” und alle aus deutschland entfernt, um auf einer auktion verkauft zu werden . dieses stück wurde gekauft und später der tate gallery in london gespendet , wo es heute bleibt .
