Frederick Evans ist am besten bekannt für seine exquisiten Fotos von englischen Kathedralen, aber seine ersten Experimente mit der Kamera um 1883 waren Photomikographen und Landschaften. Der britische Buchhändler gewann 1887 einen Preis für seine mikroskopischen Untersuchungen an Muscheln und verdiente soaring Lob von Kritikern, als er seine Kathedrale-Serie im Jahre 1890 ausstellte. Die Details seiner architektonischen Studien wurden durch ätherisches Licht erweicht, ein Effekt, der durch seine Verwendung von Cristoid-Film und meisterhaftem Platindruck akzentuiert wurde.
