Eine Hausfrau hält einen Apfel, der in diesem Zusammenhang eher auf den Neuen Abend (die Jungfrau Maria) als die alte bezieht. Die Vogelkrippe und die Herde bedeuten eine glückliche Inlandsität, während die Weintraube der Frau als "eine fruchtbare Weinrebe an den Seiten des dünnen Hauses" (Psalm 128) anschließt. Der ursprüngliche Käufer eines solchen Gemäldes, wenn er Meinungen über Kunst und Frauen hätte, hätte es wahrscheinlich als nisstuck bezeichnet, was bedeutet "niche-piece" oder "window-niche", ein von Gerrit Dou populäres illusionistisches Format.
