Ein Mann und eine Frau im Ruderboot fast bei Sonnenuntergang, ihre Reflexionen im Wasser. Sie hält einen Schirm, er hält die Ruder. Sie sehen sich nicht an. Hinter ihnen, das ruhige Meer und das Festland. Schjeldrup erhielt ihre Ausbildung in Paris und Italien, wo sie als Genre- und Portraitmaler am erfolgreichsten war. Sie wurde beauftragt, Porträts von einigen wichtigen norwegischen Figuren wie den großen norwegischen Komponisten Edvard Grieg zu malen. Ihre Genremalereien hatten oft anektotische Motive aus norwegischer Natur und alltäglichen Situationen.
