Das Umfeld, mit seinem niedrigen Horizont, basiert auf Stubbs Studie über ein Reiben Haus und Rennkurs auf Newmarket Heath. Auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere zeigte Turf eine Bucht Colt im Besitz von Lord Bolingbroke, einer der frühen Mäzen von Stubbs. Der Jockey trägt Bolingbroke Farben – schwarze Jacke und Mütze mit Büffeln. Pferd und Reiter sind komponiert und wachsam, für das Rennen zu beginnen. Ein Jockey erinnerte sich: „Ich war auf dem Edelsten montiert, der die Erde enthält, hatte ihn unter meiner Obhut und wurde von ihm über Hügel und Leich getragen, weit über die Flügel des Windes hinaus. „
