Stubbs machte eine Reihe von Arbeiten in verschiedenen Medien mit einem Pferd, das von einem Löwen angegriffen wurde. Seine ursprüngliche Inspiration war eine berühmte antike Marmorskulptur, die er wahrscheinlich auf seinem Besuch in Rom im Jahre 1754 sah. Die hier gezeigte Episode mit der endgültigen Kapitulation des Pferdes ist dem klassischen Modell am nächsten. Das Umfeld für diese gewalttätige Begegnung ist die harte, felsige Landschaft von Creswell Crags im Peak District.
