Gertrude Käsebier war ein wichtiges Mitglied der Photo-Secession-Bewegung, deren Mitglieder Edward Steichen und die meisten der fortgeschrittenen Bildhauer der Zeit umfassten. Käsebier, wie Steichen, war als Maler ausgebildet und versuchte, malerische Effekte in ihren Fotografien zu replizieren, vor allem durch Manipulation des fotografischen Negativs. Diese Praxis gewann die Gruppe den Namen
