John Fenwick wurde in England gegründet und begann seine militärische Laufbahn als Lieutenant in den USA Marines. Während des Krieges von 1812 wurde er in der Schlacht von Queenstown Heights verwundet. Er gewann schließlich 1823 die Kommission von Brevet-Brigadier-General. Während Gilbert Stuart nicht bekannt ist, in Charleston gearbeitet zu haben, war er ein Favorit unter vielen Charlestonern, die Porträts von ihm während seiner Aufenthalte in New York und später Washington, D.C.
