Stuarts populärste Portraits von Washington sind der sogenannte Athenaeum-Typ, von dem es so viele sechzig Repliken gibt, die von der Wende des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts bis zum Tod des Künstlers stammen. Oft als seine "hundred-dollar bills" - nach dem Preis jedes Gemäldes - bezeichneten die auffallenden Portraits nicht nur ein Einkommen für Stuart, sondern machte ihn auch zu einem großen Player in der Entwicklung von Washington als kulturelles Ikone, wie die Werke weit und breit verkauft.
